Dental Implants: How They Can Change Your Life

At least 178 million American adults are missing at least one tooth according to the American College of Prosthodontists, and at least 40 million are living with full tooth loss. In addition to the toll that missing teeth take on your smile and your self-esteem and confidence, tooth loss also poses a threat to your oral and general health.

If you’re one of the millions of Americans missing one or more teeth, we can help. At White Plains Family Dentistry, our team of dentists and implant specialists offer a number of solutions for every stage of tooth loss, including dental implants.

How dental implants can give you your smile back

Dental implants have one major advantage over other restorations: they restore a missing tooth from root to crown. It may not be visible when you smile, but in addition to securely anchoring the tooth in place, the root is also important for your oral health.

Once a tooth falls out, the surrounding bone tissue in the gums begins to erode, increasing your risk of periodontal (gum) disease and other oral health problems like infection. Implants help to prevent bone loss and spur the growth of healthy new tissue through a process known as osseointegration.

After the implant is surgically placed in the socket of the missing tooth, it fuses with the surrounding bone tissue. Following a short recovery period, one of our implant specialists will attach the cosmetic crown to the implant, completing the restoration.

An implant can replace a single tooth or used to secure an entire set of dentures if you’re suffering from full tooth loss.

How implants differ from other restorations

Implants are the only restoration procedure that replaces the tooth’s root, so you don’t have to worry about securing your crowns or dentures with adhesives or bridgework. Once in place, implants look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth, even if you wear dentures.

With rigorous oral hygiene and follow-up dental care, including a check-up and dental cleaning at least once a year as recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), dental implants have a very high success rate and are considered a long-term solution to tooth loss.

Implants are not right for everyone, but if you’re a healthy adult and have enough remaining bone density to support an implant, you may be a good candidate.
